EduAsiaNews, Philipina – The UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society (UPLB MASS) will hold its Mathematical Sciences Month (MSM) 2026 on October 10-28, 2026 under the theme “Math-er Earth: Quantifying a Greener Future Through Mathematical Sciences.”

The theme aims to highlight the intersection of the mathematical sciences and environmental science, and how mathematics, statistics, and computer science can be applied to environmental problems. The month-long celebration will feature six events open to UPLB students, high school students, and teachers nationwide. On-site events will be held on campus in Los Baños, Laguna.

The month-long event will open on October 10 with the 50th Annual Search for the UPLB Math Wizard, a university-wide individual competition open to all UPLB undergraduate students. Interested participants may register until October 3, with a fee of PhP 75. The Math Wizard champion will be awarded PhP 5,000 and a medal. Cash prizes and medals also await those in second and third place.

On October 24, the National Mathematical Challenge (MATHEMATCH) will gather junior and senior high school teams from across the country on campus for its fifth nationwide run, putting their mathematical skills to the test. Teams may register until October 10, with a fee of PhP 2,000 per team. The top three MATHEMATCH teams will receive cash prizes (₱15,000 for 1st place, ₱10,000 for 2nd place, and ₱5,000 for 3rd place), along with three medals and a trophy per winning team. The list of participating schools will be released on October 16.

Also on the morning of October 24, MATHEMATCH will hold its annual Teachers’ Seminar. This year’s session will cover ways to bring mathematics into environmental education, including quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and sustainability-oriented learning in the classroom.

Two competitions will be held online. STAT the Fact 2026, an infographics competition for National Statistics Month, is in its second year and is open to junior and senior high school students nationwide. Entries will be posted on October 12, and winners will be announced between October 17 and 18. The champion will receive ₱3,000, and a People’s Choice award will go to the entry with the most public votes.

Another online competition, UXplore, is the organization’s first hackathon and will run from October 12 to 28. Participants will design digital products around real user problems, with a focus on user interface and user experience. The orientation is set for October 12 at 10 a.m., and prizes will match those of STAT the Fact.

UPLB MASS will also hold its MASSter Tutorials on campus throughout October. The sessions, which are offered every semester and are open to all UPLB students, will cover topics in mathematics, computer science, and statistics. (Kylie Nicole Paragas)
