EduAsiaNews, Malang – Fat burners remain among the most sought-after dietary supplements for individuals aiming to lose weight. However, many users are disappointed when they fail to achieve the expected results despite taking these supplements consistently. This has raised an important question: Are fat burners truly effective in reducing body fat?

According to apt. Nisa Permatasari Wiyono, S.Farm., Clinical Pharmacist at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) Primary Clinic, the widespread belief that fat burners can instantly eliminate body fat without lifestyle changes is a misconception. In reality, these supplements serve only as a supportive component of a fat-loss program rather than the primary determinant of its success. The most important factor in reducing body fat remains maintaining a calorie deficit, in which calorie intake is lower than the amount of energy the body expends.

“Fat burners are not miracle products. They merely help optimize the fat-burning process when an individual is already maintaining a calorie deficit, following a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting adequate rest,” Nisa told the UM Public Relations Team on Friday (July 17).

When the body is in a calorie deficit, it begins utilizing stored body fat as an energy source. This natural physiological process leads to a reduction in body fat. During this period, feelings of hunger are normal because the body is receiving less energy than it is accustomed to.

Unfortunately, hunger is often the primary reason many weight-loss efforts fail. People frequently compensate by consuming excess food, causing the calorie deficit to disappear. As a result, fat burners fail to deliver the desired outcome. In other words, without a calorie deficit, fat-burning supplements have little to no significant effect on reducing body fat.

Conversely, individuals who consistently maintain a calorie deficit can successfully lose body fat even without using fat burners, demonstrating that such supplements function only as complementary aids rather than the deciding factor in a successful fat-loss program.

Most fat burners available on the market contain active ingredients intended to support metabolism and energy utilization, including:

Caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system to increase energy expenditure and metabolic rate.
Green Tea Extract, containing epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which may enhance thermogenesis and improve calorie burning.
L-Carnitine, an amino acid that transports fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they can be converted into energy.
Green Coffee Bean Extract, which contains chlorogenic acid and is believed to help reduce carbohydrate absorption while supporting healthy blood sugar regulation.
Yohimbe, a natural compound that may promote the release of fatty acids, making them more readily available for energy production.
B-complex vitamins, particularly vitamins B6 and B12, which assist in converting carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy.

Despite containing these ingredients, the effectiveness of fat burners ultimately depends on the user’s overall lifestyle. No ingredient can replace the fundamental importance of proper nutrition and regular physical activity.

“The success of a fat-loss program is not determined by supplements, but by consistently maintaining a calorie deficit, exercising regularly, consuming a balanced and nutritious diet, and getting sufficient quality sleep,” Nisa added.

A proper understanding of the role of fat burners can help the public avoid misleading marketing claims while encouraging the adoption of sustainable healthy lifestyle habits. It also reinforces the message that safe and effective weight management results from a combination of balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and adequate rest—not from relying solely on dietary supplements.

This educational initiative also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, by promoting public health through evidence-based education on healthy lifestyles, obesity prevention, and safe, scientifically supported weight management practices.
