EduAsiaNews, Depok – Estiarty Haryani, an academic from the School of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development (SPPB), Universitas Indonesia (UI), has developed a green productivity implementation strategy to support the sustainable operation of Indonesia’s palm oil industry. Her research was driven by the industry’s current challenges, particularly increasing environmental pressures and the evolving demands of the global market.
In her doctoral dissertation, titled “Sustainability Strategy for Implementing Green Productivity in the Palm Oil Industry (A Case Study of PT X in West Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi Province),” Estiarty highlighted the urgency of transforming Indonesia’s palm oil sector in response to the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR), which requires products marketed and consumed within the European Union to be free from deforestation-related practices. This development underscores the need for an approach that effectively integrates economic efficiency with environmental sustainability.
The study employed a qualitative approach combined with mixed methods. Data were collected through interviews, community surveys, field observations, and literature reviews. The analytical framework was further strengthened using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to comprehensively examine the relationships among key variables.
The findings indicate that the implementation of green productivity at the case-study company falls within the “good” category. External factors analyzed through the PESTEL framework—covering political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal dimensions—were found to have a significant influence on implementation. Among these, political and legal factors emerged as the primary drivers shaping policy direction and encouraging technological adoption within the palm oil industry.
The dissertation offers a strategic framework for addressing the Indonesian palm oil sector’s major sustainability challenges. By integrating economic efficiency with environmental protection, the research provides practical guidance for industry stakeholders to enhance competitiveness while complying with international sustainability standards. It also offers broader public insight into how industrial operations can align with environmental stewardship, supporting more accountable, environmentally responsible, and globally competitive governance.
As a follow-up to her research, Estiarty formulated a sustainability strategy based on the SMART principles—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. The strategy emphasizes the importance of strong and consistent regulatory frameworks as the primary catalyst for ensuring the effective and sustainable implementation of green productivity.
Estiarty successfully defended her dissertation during her doctoral examination held at the IASTH Building, 5th Floor, UI Salemba Campus, Jakarta, on July 4, 2026. The examination was chaired by Prof. Dr. Drs. Supriatna, M.T., Director of SPPB UI. Her supervisory committee consisted of Dr. Herdis Herdiansyah, S.Fil.I., M.Hum., Dr. dt. Tri Edhi Budhi Soesilo, M.Si., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosyani, M.A. The examination panel included Prof. Dr. Boge Triatmanto, M.M., Dr. Agus Triyono, S.Si., M.Kes., Dr. Yuki Mahardhito Adhitya Wardhana, S.Hut., M.Si., Dr. Sc. Agr. Aiyen Tjoa, M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. Ir. Dwi Nowo Martono, M.Si. Estiarty was officially recognized as the 255th doctoral graduate of UI’s Environmental Science Program and the 31st doctoral graduate of SPPB UI.
Through Estiarty Haryani’s scholarly contribution, Universitas Indonesia further reinforces its commitment to addressing global sustainability challenges. The university continues to support the transformation of Indonesia’s palm oil industry toward environmentally responsible, efficient, and globally competitive practices while strengthening the role of Indonesian academia in advancing sustainable development.
