EduAsiaNews, Singapore – A lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FT UNJ) has once again demonstrated the university’s international engagement through a community service program aimed at strengthening competencies in cosmetic safety and environmental sustainability. The program, titled “Strengthening Cosmetic Safety Competence Through a Hazardous and Toxic Materials Guideline Book for Gayatri Beauty Academy Singapore Trainees,” was held on June 6–7, 2026, at the Singapore Expo in Singapore.
Supported by the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of UNJ, the program was implemented through a collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering at UNJ and Gayatri Beauty Academy Singapore. A total of 30 trainees from the beauty academy participated in the training, which was designed to enhance their knowledge, skills, and awareness of cosmetic safety, the risks associated with hazardous and toxic substances, and the application of sustainability principles within the beauty industry.
The head of the community service team, Dwi Atmanto, explained that the circulation of illegal cosmetic products remains a challenge in many countries because such products may contain ingredients that do not comply with established safety standards. Hazardous substances frequently found in these products include mercury, hydroquinone at concentrations exceeding regulatory limits, and other chemical compounds that may pose serious health risks to consumers.
“Improving the literacy of consumers and beauty practitioners is an essential step in preventing the use of unsafe cosmetic products. The public needs to understand how to verify product legality, read ingredient labels, and identify safety information provided on product packaging,” said Dwi.
During the program, participants also received training on the concept of Safe Cosmetics, which promotes the responsible and safe use of cosmetic products. In addition, the FT UNJ team introduced the concept of Green Beauty, an approach that emphasizes not only consumer health but also the environmental impact of beauty products.
Another member of the community service team, Eti Herawati, delivered a session on the characteristics of safe cosmetic products and the importance of environmentally responsible consumer behavior. Participants learned how to select products with eco-friendly packaging and adopt practices that help reduce environmental pollution caused by cosmetic waste.
As part of the competency enhancement program, participants also received training on cosmetic waste management based on the principles of the circular economy through the reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R) approach. This strategy is expected to encourage more responsible and sustainable waste management practices within the beauty industry.
To support the learning process, the FT UNJ team developed and distributed a pocket guidebook containing practical information on identifying hazardous ingredients in cosmetics, recognizing safe products, understanding Green Beauty principles, and implementing effective cosmetic waste management strategies. The guidebook was designed as a practical reference that participants can use in their daily activities as well as in their professional practice.
Participants demonstrated strong enthusiasm throughout the program. Interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions featured a wide range of inquiries regarding cosmetic ingredient safety, methods for identifying illegal products, and environmentally friendly waste management practices. Many participants expressed that the training provided valuable new insights highly relevant to the current needs of the beauty industry.
The success of the program received positive recognition from Dyah Novita, Head of Gayatri Beauty Academy Singapore, as well as Thomas Ardian Siregar, a representative of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Singapore. They acknowledged that the initiative made a meaningful contribution to enhancing the competencies of future beauty professionals in the areas of cosmetic safety and environmental sustainability.
Through this initiative, the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Negeri Jakarta has not only expanded the international impact of its community engagement activities but also reinforced its role as a higher education institution committed to promoting safe, healthy, and sustainable practices within the regional beauty industry.
