EduAsiaNews, Bandung – Universitas Padjadjaran has strengthened its role in global academic and environmental policy forums. This was demonstrated through the active involvement of Professor of the Faculty of Agricultural Industrial Technology (FTIP) Unpad, Prof. Chay Asdak, in the strategic meeting of the Intergovernmental Working Group (IWG) on the Future Strategic Framework, held at the headquarters of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Bonn, Germany, on May 12–14, 2026.

The UNCCD IWG meeting brought together global stakeholders to formulate the Vision and Key Elements of the Future Implementation of the Convention Text, which will serve as the future strategic framework for implementing the UNCCD convention. The resulting document from the discussions will become a key agenda item at the UNCCD Conference of Parties 17, scheduled to take place in Mongolia in August 2026.

At the global forum, Prof. Chay represented Indonesia while also carrying out his role as Vice Chair of Science and Technology UNCCD. He emphasized the importance of strengthening scientific foundations in the formulation of international policies, particularly regarding land management, climate change mitigation, and environmental resilience.

He also highlighted the importance of representing the perspectives of developing countries, especially those from Asia, in developing inclusive and implementable global policy frameworks.

The UNCCD itself is one of the legally binding environmental conventions under the United Nations, focusing on combating desertification, land degradation, and the impacts of drought through sustainable land management approaches.

The forum was attended by National Focal Points, scientists, and government representatives from various regions worldwide, including Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. Such cross-country collaboration plays an essential role in strengthening international commitments toward sustainable land management and reducing the risks of drought and desertification.

Prof. Chay’s participation reflects Unpad’s contribution to strengthening international collaboration in environmental and sustainable development issues. Through the involvement of academics in global forums, Unpad continues to promote the role of science in supporting inclusive, research-based, and sustainability-oriented policymaking for the global environment.
