EduAsiaNews, Jakarta — The appointment of Anter Venus as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Association of Communication Science Lecturers and Researchers (ADPIKI) was carried out as part of efforts to strengthen the organization’s strategic direction amid the challenges posed by digital disruption, artificial intelligence (AI), and the rapidly evolving communication landscape.

The appointment of the academic, who is widely recognized for his active contributions to the development of digital communication and media studies, is expected to strengthen ADPIKI’s role in building a communication ecosystem grounded in scientific knowledge, public literacy, and the more responsible use of digital technology in Indonesia.

Prof. Anter Venus stated that the development of digital technology and AI has fundamentally transformed the way people produce, distribute, and consume information on a massive scale, creating new challenges in social life and public communication.

“The current flood of information does not automatically make society better or wiser. Instead, serious challenges have emerged in the form of misinformation, disinformation, infodemics, and digital fatigue caused by the overwhelming flow of information,” Anter Venus said during his presentation titled “Communication Strategies for Managing Information Overload in the Digital and AI Era.”

He explained that digital algorithms no longer function merely as tools for information distribution, but are increasingly taking over the role of shaping society’s construction of social reality. According to him, this condition demands a communication approach that is more critical, adaptive, and grounded in scientific understanding.

“Algorithms are gradually taking over the way humans understand social reality. Therefore, communication should not only be understood as the delivery of messages, but also as an instrument for shaping social awareness and public decision-making,” he said.

Prof. Anter Venus further noted that public information consumption in the digital era continues to rise alongside the increasing use of the internet and social media, including growing AI penetration among younger generations. According to him, this situation makes society increasingly vulnerable to hoaxes, filter bubbles, post-truth narratives, and algorithm-driven information manipulation.

He emphasized that the academic community bears a major responsibility to promote public communication that is factual, credible, and science-based amid growing information polarization in digital spaces. Therefore, strengthening media literacy, critical thinking skills, verification culture, AI ethics, and personal data protection has become essential in the modern communication era.

“Public communication must be built upon accurate, factual, and science-based information. Society must also strengthen critical thinking skills in order to avoid being easily trapped by manipulative flows of information,” he stated.

According to him, nearly all communication and media theories remain relevant for understanding social transformation in the digital era, ranging from agenda-setting and framing theories to uses and gratification, social network theory, and cyber community theory. The challenges of modern communication, he added, require flexible approaches because digital spaces are participatory, fluid, personal, and at the same time highly polarizing.

ADPIKI hopes that the presence of Prof. Anter Venus as Chairman of the Advisory Board will strengthen the organization’s contribution to the development of communication science that is responsive to technological advancements, social transformation, and the evolving needs of public communication in Indonesia.
