EduAsiaNews, Jakarta – In order to disseminate information regarding the implementation of the Joint Selection Program for Prospective New Students Admission to Public Universities through the Independent Pathway of the BKS-PTN Barat Consortium (SMMPTN-Barat) 2026, a soft launching event was held on Monday, May 4, 2026, virtually via the Zoom platform.

This event marked the official opening of registration for SMMPTN-Barat 2026, which serves as a joint independent admission pathway for 27 public universities in the western region of Indonesia that are members of the BKS-PTN Barat Consortium.

The soft launching was attended by more than 230 participants, including the Chair of SMMPTN-Barat 2026, university rectors from member institutions of the consortium, the Central Committee for Entrance Examinations (PPUM), as well as dozens of teachers from various senior high schools, vocational schools, and equivalent institutions across western Indonesia.

The Chair of SMMPTN-Barat 2026, Prof. Dr. Ibrahim, M.Si., who also serves as the Rector of Bangka Belitung University, officially opened the event while presenting the technical implementation of SMMPTN-Barat 2026. In his presentation, he outlined the registration process, selection mechanisms, and stages of the examination designed to facilitate prospective applicants.

He also emphasized that the SMMPTN-Barat pathway serves as both an alternative and a flexible option for prospective students to access higher education. “The presence of this pathway provides an alternative and flexibility for students to access higher education,” he stated.

In his explanation, he noted that registration opens on May 4, 2026, and the selection results will be announced on June 30, 2026, at 16:00 WIB through the official portal, which is also supported by alternative websites to anticipate technical issues.

He added that the entire registration process is conducted centrally through the official registration portal, which includes the registration page, participant account page, and information and guidance pages accessible to prospective students. In addition, participants can obtain the latest updates through various official SMMPTN-Barat social media channels.

Furthermore, Prof. Ibrahim elaborated on the advantages of SMMPTN-Barat, which are designed to provide opportunities and convenience for prospective students. In terms of opportunities, the selection involves 27 public universities offering more than 1,013 study programs with a total capacity of approximately 20,035 student quotas, including options across different categories of institutions such as general, arts, and religious public universities.

From the perspective of flexibility, participants are allowed to choose across academic streams (science/technology and social sciences/humanities), select up to two study programs, and are not required to take the examination at the location of their chosen university. Meanwhile, from a system perspective, the selection is conducted using a standardized Computer-Based Written Examination (UTBK), covering a wide geographical area including Sumatra, western Java, and Kalimantan, and is complemented by an objection mechanism (sanggah) as a form of transparency.

The official soft launching was conducted by the Chair of BKS PTN-Barat, Prof. Dr. Ir. Salampak, M.S., who also serves as the Rector of the University of Palangka Raya. In his remarks prior to inaugurating the event, he stated that BKS PTN-Barat was established in 1979 and currently comprises 39 member public universities spread across Sumatra, West Java, East Kalimantan, and Central Kalimantan.

He added that the consortium carries a mission to enhance the capacity of higher education in Indonesia through various programs, including seminars, workshops, competitions, and collaborative activities such as national and international community service programs (KKN).

Furthermore, he explained that the SMMPTN-Barat program is one of the strategic initiatives agreed upon by the rectors of the consortium’s member institutions. The program was first implemented in 2017 with the participation of 15 public universities and has continued to grow to this day.

“This year, we are implementing it with greater optimism than in previous years. The participating public universities share the same spirit in improving the quality of education while upholding transparency, fairness, and integrity in the new student admission process,” he stated.

He also expressed hope that collaboration among universities would continue to be strengthened in order to provide broader and higher-quality access to higher education for the Indonesian public. He encouraged prospective students to make the most of this opportunity and to join public universities in the western region.

In addition to marking the opening of registration, this event also functioned as a forum for coordination and alignment of perspectives among consortium member universities. This is essential to ensure that the implementation of SMMPTN-Barat 2026 proceeds in an orderly, transparent, and standardized manner.

For UPNVJ, participation in SMMPTN-Barat is part of its commitment to expanding access to higher education for the community. Through this pathway, UPNVJ supports transparent and accountable new student admission policies while providing broader opportunities for prospective students to choose study programs in accordance with their potential and interests. Inter-university collaboration through SMMPTN-Barat represents a strategic step toward strengthening the quality of higher education services while fostering more inclusive opportunities for Indonesia’s younger generation.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
