EduAsiaNews, Jakarta — Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) has been nominated for the 2026 Anugerah Media Humas (AMH), or Public Relations Media Awards, in the Public Communication Campaign category organized by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi). The nomination recognizes its “Green Campus Cares for Waste” campaign, which carries the message “Waste Management Starts with Us.” The nomination was confirmed in an official letter from Komdigi dated Nov. 6, 2026, following a national-level assessment of public relations initiatives.

The nomination marks an important achievement for UPNVJ in developing public communication initiatives focused on environmental issues. Through the campaign, UPNVJ’s Public Relations team has integrated waste management education, the promotion of innovations developed by its academic community, and community empowerment to raise awareness and encourage participation in sustainable waste management.

Dr. Firdaus Noor, M.IKom., M.Sn., head of UPNVJ’s Public Relations, Integrated Services and Public Information Working Team, said the nomination recognized the university’s consistent efforts to develop public communication that goes beyond disseminating information and delivers tangible benefits to society.

“Being nominated for the 2026 Anugerah Media Humas in the Public Communication Campaign category is a form of national recognition and validation of UPN ‘Veteran’ Jakarta’s commitment to delivering public communication with a tangible impact,” Firdaus said.

He explained that the campaign reflected UPNVJ Public Relations’ efforts to communicate environmental initiatives developed by lecturers, students, administrative staff and community partners. A collaborative approach has been central to expanding the campaign’s reach and fostering shared responsibility for addressing waste-related challenges.

“Through the ‘Green Campus Cares for Waste’ campaign, we are not merely delivering educational messages but also encouraging collaborative action across the university community to promote environmental awareness in line with the values of National Defense and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This recognition from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will further motivate the entire UPNVJ Public Relations team to continue innovating, maintain transparency and strengthen public trust,” he added.

The “Green Campus Cares for Waste” campaign is based on the understanding that waste problems cannot be addressed solely by providing sanitation facilities. They also require behavioral changes, technological support and collaboration among various stakeholders. The initiative also supports the SDGs, particularly in education, sustainable communities, responsible consumption and climate action.

To implement the campaign, UPNVJ’s Public Relations team adopted an integrated communication strategy using the PESO (Paid, Earned, Shared and Owned Media) model. The strategy combines publications on the university’s and faculties’ official websites, social media content, coverage by external media outlets and paid promotional activities to broaden the campaign’s reach.

According to campaign records covering January to October 2026, UPNVJ Public Relations published 21 articles on university and faculty websites, 18 social media posts and secured 15 reports in external media outlets. The materials covered educational activities, research, technological innovations and community service initiatives related to waste management.

One of the innovations featured was EcoScale, developed by students from UPNVJ’s Faculty of Computer Science through the SMART-WASTE program. The technology supports the digitalization of operations at the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank in Bogor regency, including the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology in waste bank management.

Another contribution came from UPNVJ’s Faculty of Engineering through the development of plastic waste processing technology. The innovation uses shredding and recycling processes to turn plastic waste into useful products. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to develop technology-based solutions for waste recovery and strengthen the circular economy.

The campaign also involved student organizations and communities within the university. Through various social media channels, messages promoting waste sorting, reducing single-use plastics and supporting waste bank activities were disseminated to encourage greater participation among members of the university community in building an environmentally conscious culture.

In addition to digital publications, the campaign was reinforced through direct educational activities. In October 2026, UPNVJ Public Relations organized a waste-sorting education session involving an initial assessment of 10 participants. The results showed that nine participants demonstrated an understanding of how to sort waste by type. These limited findings will serve as evaluation material for developing more sustainable environmental education approaches.

In terms of media monitoring, the campaign’s internal evaluation recorded 82.2 percent positive sentiment, 15.6 percent neutral sentiment and 2.2 percent negative sentiment. The predominance of positive sentiment in the monitored coverage indicated a generally supportive media response to the environmental issues highlighted by UPNVJ. The findings will inform efforts to improve messaging, expand communication reach and encourage greater public participation.

UPNVJ has also developed environmental management initiatives through various community service programs. These activities seek to connect research findings and technological innovations with community needs, positioning waste management not merely as a sanitation issue but also as part of broader social and economic empowerment efforts.

The Anugerah Media Humas is an annual award organized by Komdigi for public relations practitioners from ministries, government agencies, state-owned enterprises, universities and regional administrations. The awards aim to encourage innovation, improve the quality of public communication and promote information management that benefits society.

According to an invitation received by UPNVJ, the 2026 AMH awards ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2026, at the Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta. The event will mark the culmination of the awards program, recognizing public communication initiatives and practices from institutions across Indonesia.

For UPNVJ, the nomination provides further impetus to develop public communication that goes beyond information dissemination by connecting knowledge, innovation and community needs. The “Green Campus Cares for Waste” campaign is expected to continue growing as a collective movement to promote environmental awareness and responsibility.

In line with the leadership direction of UPNVJ Acting Rector Nur Syarifah, S.H., LL.M., who has emphasized the importance of professional, transparent and accountable university governance, strengthening public communication forms part of the university’s efforts to sustain its strategic programs. Through collaboration among lecturers, students, administrative staff and communities, UPNVJ remains committed to expanding the benefits of environmental innovation, reinforcing the values of National Defense and supporting the Diktisaintek Berdampak initiative.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
