EduAsiaNews, Jakarta – The Public Relations Office of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) has conducted a public communication initiative to educate the university community on how to sort waste correctly by type. The initiative is part of UPNVJ’s efforts to raise collective awareness of the importance of waste management and strengthen its commitment to being an environmentally conscious green campus.

The educational initiative provided information on classifying waste according to its characteristics, emphasizing that waste should not be treated as a single category of refuse to be disposed of indiscriminately. With a better understanding of waste sorting, members of the university community are expected to distinguish between waste types and place them in the appropriate bins at the point of disposal.

As part of the initiative, UPNVJ’s Public Relations Office also conducted a simple survey involving 10 people to assess their understanding of waste sorting. The results showed that nine out of 10 respondents, or 90 percent, understood how to sort waste by type.

These findings suggest that most of the respondents had understood the educational messages about waste sorting. Nevertheless, continued education on waste management remains essential to ensure that knowledge translates into everyday habits and behavior across the campus.

Simple actions such as sorting waste are important because they mark the starting point of more effective waste management. Sorting waste at the source can facilitate subsequent processing, increase opportunities for reuse and recycling, and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

The public communication initiative also represents UPNVJ’s support for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13 on Climate Action.

Through consistent environmental campaigns and educational initiatives, UPNVJ seeks to make waste management an integral part of campus culture. A green campus is built not only by providing facilities and infrastructure but also by changing the mindsets and behavior of the entire university community.

Going forward, education on waste sorting and management is expected to reach a wider audience through the involvement of students, lecturers, administrative staff and various units across UPNVJ. With collective participation, the simple habit of sorting waste can grow into a broader movement with a greater positive impact on the environment.

Through these efforts, UPNVJ underscores that universities can contribute to sustainable development through simple, consistent actions, including fostering responsible waste-sorting and management habits.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
