EduAsiaNews, Jakarta — Held at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Kristen Indonesia (UKI), Musa Maliki, Ph.D., Lecturer in International Relations at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, emphasized that in reviewing the points of the SDGs, students must adopt a critical perspective. This was conveyed during a guest lecture themed “Reflections on the SDGs for the Sustainability of Humanity” on Wednesday (10/06).
This topic was addressed amid concerns that the SDGs could be used as an instrument of “new colonialism” through the systemic transfer of wealth, control over technology, and the disregard of local sovereignty for the sake of economic growth alone.
“Rather than simply viewing it with optimism, students as an intellectual group must possess critical awareness (curiosity) to seek a better future, and not merely become followers,” Musa urged.
At the close of the session, Musa asserted that the SDGs today have, in fact, transformed into a new form of colonialism in the world. In addition, corporations use patents and investments to control and dominate marginalized groups. He also noted that, today, the state functions as an agent for global actors and corporations.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
