EduAsiaNews, Phnom Penh — Cambodia has entered a new chapter in its journey in science and innovation. On March 27, 2026, the country took a significant step toward strengthening its innovation ecosystem through the operationalization of a national research funding mechanism.
The Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Research Foundation, H.E. Hem Vanndy, stated that the establishment of the National Research Foundation marks a historic milestone in reinforcing the foundations of Cambodia’s innovation ecosystem, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting research and development in a transparent, sustainable, and effective manner.
The announcement was made during a technical workshop on national and regional research funding mechanisms, held as a side event of the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Day 2026 in Phnom Penh.
Dr. Eng Netra, Executive Director of the Cambodia Development Resource Institute (CDRI), revealed that his institution has secured three-year funding support from the Government of Canada to provide technical assistance to the National Research Foundation. This support aims to strengthen the capacity of researchers and research institutions, enhance the absorption of research funding, and promote evidence-based policymaking in Cambodia.
The newly established National Research Fund will support both public and private research institutions, foster human resource development, and strengthen collaboration to accelerate Cambodia’s transition toward an innovation-driven economy. (**)
