EduAsiaNews, Malang – Fathan Atthala, a 2021 medical student, graduated cum laude and was named the top graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Brawijaya (UB) for the XIV Graduation Period of the 2025/2026 Academic Year, on Sunday (February 1, 2026). He graduated with a GPA of 3.98.
He earned the distinction of “very satisfactory” after completing his thesis research titled “The Relationship Between Stress Levels and Dry Eye Disease (DED) in Rural Areas of Malang Regency.” His research was conducted in Mendalanwangi Village, Malang Regency, using an analysis of psychosocial factors and ocular health conditions.
“I found that an individual’s stress level is indeed related to the onset of dry eye disease. This means that patient management should not focus solely on eye therapy, but requires a comprehensive and holistic approach that also considers psychosocial aspects,” Fathan explained.
The graduate from South Tangerang emphasized the importance of stress management as part of a long-term therapeutic strategy for patients.
In his study, Fathan highlighted that dry eye disease is a chronic eye condition that often causes pain, dryness, a gritty sensation, and visual disturbances. High-risk groups include the elderly, women, heavy users of digital devices, and contact lens wearers.
Fathan’s academic journey at UB Faculty of Medicine provided him with valuable knowledge and experience.
“Medical education at UB Faculty of Medicine not only teaches us to recognize and treat various diseases through lectures and case discussions, but also emphasizes character education to shape future doctors capable of serving patients responsibly,” he stated.
In addition, he actively participated in community service activities through faculty student organizations.
Fathan is currently undergoing medical professional education (clinical clerkship) at RSUD dr. Saiful Anwar, a stage that allows him to deepen his clinical skills directly under the supervision of senior doctors and healthcare professionals.
“Professional education has helped me further understand a wide range of medical knowledge and practices under the supervision of lecturers and other healthcare professionals,” he added.
