
EduAsiaNews, Bogor — The Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (GSGES) of Kyoto University held the Kyoto University International Symposium on Education and Research in Global Environmental Studies in Asia at IPB University (Bogor Agricultural University), Bogor, Indonesia. Carrying the theme Improving Sustainable Food Systems and Livelihoods, the recently held event was conducted in a hybrid format, combining on-site participation with online attendance via Zoom.
The international symposium aimed to strengthen discourse on approaches and perspectives for the development of sustainable food systems and livelihoods in Asia. The forum also formed part of broader efforts to promote the international development of education and research collaboration between Kyoto University and its partner universities in various countries.
The main program comprised keynote speeches, a poster session with oral presentations, panel discussions, and presentations of international research projects. A total of 353 participants—including researchers, students, and private-sector representatives from 91 institutions across 27 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the United States—took part in the symposium.
The event opened with remarks from GSGES Dean Chihiro Tanaka and IPB University Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Agromaritime Development Ernan Rustiadi. Keynote addresses were delivered by GSGES Vice Dean Izuru Saizen, Ernan Rustiadi, and Director of the Kyoto University ASEAN Center Eiji Nawata. The program then continued with a poster session featuring 62 research presentations by early-career researchers and students.
The panel discussion brought together representatives from several Asian higher education institutions, including Kyoto University, IPB University, Bandung Institute of Technology, the Royal University of Agriculture of Cambodia, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and a number of universities in Vietnam. The symposium concluded with the presentation of the Best Poster Award and a reaffirmation of international cooperation commitments to strengthen interdisciplinary networks, enrich educational curricula, and advance collaborative research toward a sustainable future.
