EduAsiaNews, Tokyo — From the research laboratories of Waseda University, an artificial intelligence–based startup has stepped onto the national stage. Equmenopolis Inc., a research and development startup born out of Waseda’s academic ecosystem, has been selected for the Forbes JAPAN list “100 Next Generation Leaders: Japan’s Top 100 Startups to Watch in 2026.” This recognition marks the first time a Waseda-origin R&D startup has been included on the prestigious list.

Equmenopolis develops conversational diagnostic AI agents—artificial intelligence systems designed to read, assess, and support learning processes through dialogue.

Waseda University itself is a renowned private university in Japan, located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Founded in 1882, it is one of the country’s most prestigious research universities, with a long-standing tradition of academic excellence.

Building on interactive AI research conducted at Waseda, the company developed the EQU AI Platform, which has been applied to the language-learning service LANGX Speaking. The service is now used nationwide across Japan and is said to be bringing a fresh approach to English language education in schools.

Equmenopolis’s appearance on Forbes JAPAN’s radar is closely tied to its aggressive growth in both business and research. In March 2025, the startup completed a pre–Series A funding round worth 250 million yen, accelerating service expansion and technological development. Forbes JAPAN evaluates companies on the list based on business innovation, social impact, and funding achievements—and Equmenopolis met all of these criteria.

For Waseda University, the achievement represents more than the success of a single startup. It serves as proof that university research can be transformed into tangible solutions for society without sacrificing scientific depth. Known as one of Japan’s leading intellectual centers, Waseda reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the commercialization of research through knowledge-based entrepreneurship.

Equmenopolis CEO Yoichi Matsuyama stated that the company’s dialog-based AI technology aims to build a new learning framework in fields that rely heavily on conversation, such as education, healthcare, and the workplace. “We want to return the results of Waseda’s interdisciplinary research to society, while also bringing Japanese technology to the global stage,” he said—capturing the spirit of the times, when universities, startups, and AI move together to shape the future.(**)
