EduAsiaNews, Jakarta — The Faculty of Law at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (FH UPNVJ) has partnered with the Faculty of Law at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia, and the Depok City Family Welfare Movement (TP-PKK) to improve legal literacy among micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) owners.
Through an international community service program, the collaboration provided guidance on legal risk mapping, business dispute prevention, and dispute resolution through mediation. Supported by internal funding from FH UPNVJ, the program aims to strengthen legal protection and promote the sustainability of community-based businesses.
FH UPNVJ Dean Dr. Suherman, S.H., LL.M., officially opened the program and highlighted the role of the Depok City TP-PKK in empowering the local economy. He noted that Working Groups II and III play important roles in developing skills, cooperatives, and family-based business initiatives.
In the first session, FH UPNVJ lecturer Rianda Dirkareshza, S.H., M.H., discussed dispute risk mapping in MSME operations. He outlined various issues that could trigger business conflicts, including late payments, breaches of agreements, profit-sharing disputes, and trademark imitation. Business owners were encouraged to draw up written agreements and maintain transaction records to minimize the risk of disputes.
Meanwhile, Dr. Muthia Sakti, S.H., M.H., emphasized the importance of legal awareness and literacy as preventive measures. MSME owners need to understand business legality, obtain a Business Identification Number (NIB), protect their trademarks, and properly manage business documents. She also explained that micro and small enterprises are eligible for free legal assistance and support services under Government Regulation No. 7/2021.
An international perspective was presented by UiTM Faculty of Law Dean Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nur Ezan Rahmat through a session titled Mediation Approach for MSMEs: A Comparative Perspective. She discussed mediation as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism that prioritizes dialogue, mutual agreement, and the preservation of business relationships. Her presentation also compared the legal frameworks governing mediation in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Through this international collaboration, FH UPNVJ seeks to connect academic expertise with the practical needs of the community. Improved legal literacy and a better understanding of mediation are expected to help MSME owners anticipate risks, protect their business interests, and maintain sustainable business relationships.
The program also reinforces UPNVJ’s commitment to fulfilling the university’s Tridharma obligations through impactful community service and international academic collaboration.
