EduAsiaNews, Jakarta — The Accounting Student Association of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (HIMA S1 Akuntansi FEB UPNVJ) organized CLEANERAKS1 2026, a river-cleanup initiative at Grogol River in Kebayoran, Jakarta, on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026.

Under the theme “Flow Forward: Act for the River, Care for the Future,” the event provided students with an opportunity to raise environmental awareness through direct action. Held from 7:50 a.m. to 10:57 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, the initiative involved HIMA S1 Akuntansi board members, student participants and local community representatives.

The river cleanup was the main activity of CLEANERAKS1 2026, taking place from 9:10 a.m. to 10:24 a.m. Participants were divided into several groups and provided with personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies before collecting waste along the Grogol River.

Andi Manggala Putra, S.E., M.Sc., coordinator of FEB UPNVJ’s Accounting Study Program, said addressing waste problems required the involvement of various stakeholders. He emphasized that waste management should not be left solely to the public, but should also involve producers and the government through supportive policies and regulations aimed at reducing waste.

“Responsibility should not rest solely with the public or community groups. Producers who manufacture packaging must also take responsibility, as must the government through restrictions and regulations,” Andi said.

HIMA S1 Akuntansi Chair Galang said CLEANERAKS1 2026 was expected to raise students’ awareness of environmental conditions, particularly river pollution, which remains a challenge in Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia.

“Through this event, we hope students will become more aware of environmental issues, given that rivers in Jakarta and across Indonesia are increasingly polluted. This activity is also one way to put the university’s commitment to serving the community and protecting the environment into practice,” Galang said.

CLEANERAKS1 2026 Project Officer Wisky emphasized that the initiative was more than just a student organization program. The river cleanup, he said, was part of a broader effort to encourage behavioral change and make environmental awareness a part of everyday life.

“CLEANERAKS1 is not merely an organizational work program. It is a step toward change, aimed at raising public awareness and encouraging people to live in a way that shows greater care for the environment,” Wisky said.

Before the cleanup began, participants attended a briefing with local community representatives to receive instructions on the activity’s procedures and site conditions. HIMA S1 Akuntansi also presented a plaque to the local representatives in appreciation of their support and collaboration.

Following the briefing, participants received personal protective equipment and cleaning supplies before heading to the Grogol River. The waste collected during the cleanup was subsequently transported with the assistance of local representatives for further handling. The activity not only helped improve the cleanliness of the river area but also gave students firsthand experience of the importance of maintaining clean waterways and managing waste responsibly.

After the cleanup, participants gathered for a group photo at the site before returning to Taman Langsat, the event’s starting point. The program continued with the announcement of outstanding participants and the presentation of prizes in recognition of their involvement and contributions.

The event concluded with a break and lunch. Before the participants dispersed, the organizing committee conducted a final cleanup to ensure that the areas used during the event were left clean.

Through CLEANERAKS1 2026, HIMA S1 Akuntansi FEB UPNVJ highlighted how environmental responsibility can be demonstrated through simple actions taken collectively. The spirit of “Flow Forward: Act for the River, Care for the Future” is expected to extend beyond the river-cleanup event and develop into a lasting habit of environmental stewardship.

For FEB UPNVJ, student involvement in social and environmental initiatives is part of its efforts to foster awareness and social responsibility. CLEANERAKS1 2026 also reinforces the role of students as members of society who can make meaningful contributions to environmental protection and sustainability through concrete action.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
