EduAsiaNews, Malang – Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) organized the Basic Scout Leader Course (Kursus Mahir Dasar/KMD) and Advanced Scout Leader Course (Kursus Mahir Lanjutan/KML) for 549 students enrolled in the 2026 Teacher Professional Education (PPG) Program. The initiative represents a strategic effort by UM to strengthen the scouting, leadership, and character-building competencies of prospective teachers, equipping them to nurture future generations who are principled, independent, and competitive within the school environment.

The KMD and KML programs were delivered through a combination of online and in-person learning methods. The online sessions were conducted from Monday to Thursday (June 8–11), covering topics such as the fundamentals of scouting, leadership, scout activity management, and character development. The in-person component, consisting of field practice and a camping program, took place from Friday to Sunday (June 12–14).

The highlight of the in-person activities was held at the Sengkaling Recreational Park Campsite in Malang, which served as a venue for experiential learning. Through this approach, participants were provided with opportunities to apply the theories they had learned directly in real-life field situations.

During the camping program, students participated in a variety of activities designed to enhance scouting skills, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving abilities. Educational games and nation-building activities were also incorporated to strengthen character, responsibility, and the spirit of mutual cooperation as essential attributes of future educators.

“KMD and KML serve as platforms for prospective teachers to develop leadership competencies, character, and the ability to manage scouting activities that can later be implemented in schools,” stated the organizers during the program.

Through this initiative, students gained the scouting knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to support educational processes within schools. These competencies constitute valuable assets for future teachers in guiding students, both through classroom instruction and extracurricular activities.

In addition to enhancing the quality of human resources in education, the program offers long-term benefits by strengthening the character of younger generations through the role of teachers as role models and mentors. Consequently, graduates of the PPG program are expected to deliver education that emphasizes not only academic achievement but also the holistic character development of students.

The implementation of the KMD and KML Scout Training Courses for UM’s PPG students aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), through efforts to enhance educator competencies. The program also supports SDG 16 by strengthening character values, leadership, and national identity in order to foster an inclusive, peaceful, and integrity-driven society.
