EduAsiaNews, Jakarta – Efforts to preserve environmental sustainability continue to be strengthened by Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) through technology-based waste management innovation. UPNVJ has introduced an integrated waste processing facility capable of sustainably managing both organic and non-organic waste, representing a concrete step in addressing waste-related challenges within the educational environment.

Today (April 15, 2026), the Waste Management Device Development Team—led by Sigit Perdana, an active lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UPNVJ, along with Budhi Martana, a retired FT UPNVJ lecturer, and their team—conducted a trial of the equipment.

Sigit explained that the facility is primarily focused on processing non-organic waste, particularly plastics such as polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). “Some of the plastic waste is shredded, while the rest is processed into products such as sheet boards that can be reused,” he stated.

In addition to focusing on non-organic waste, UPNVJ has also developed a system for processing organic waste derived from cafeteria food scraps, waste oil, and fallen leaves around the campus. This approach ensures that all types of waste are managed optimally and sustainably.

According to Sigit, the university leadership, together with the waste management team, shares a vision of establishing an integrated waste management system within the campus. This system is expected to serve as an effective waste management model while contributing to the reduction of overall waste volume.

“This initiative reflects our support for government policies on waste reduction, as well as our tangible contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in environmental preservation,” he added.

Moving forward, UPNVJ plans to develop a waste bank program as a continuation of the existing waste management system. This program is expected to increase the participation of the academic community in waste management while strengthening a culture of environmental awareness across the campus.

Through this innovation, UPNVJ not only serves as an educational institution but also plays an active role as an agent of change in promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
