EduAsiaNews, Jakarta – The Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ), through its Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UPNVJ (FISIP), organized a public lecture titled Publishing a Reputable International Journal: Strategies for Success on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the FISIP UPNVJ Diplomacy Laboratory. The event featured the Professor of Indonesian Studies from Nanzan University, Nagoya, Japan, Mikihiro Moriyama, as the keynote speaker, aiming to equip the academic community with strategies for publishing in internationally reputable journals.
In his opening remarks, the Rector of UPNVJ, Anter Venus, emphasized the importance of perseverance in the academic process. He encouraged participants to engage fully in the session as part of cultivating a disciplined learning culture. According to him, the presence of Prof. Moriyama represented a strategic opportunity to broaden perspectives and gain insights into global academic practices that can be adapted within the UPNVJ environment.
In his presentation, Prof. Mikihiro Moriyama—affectionately known as Kang Miki—stated that success in academic publishing is determined from the very beginning, particularly in the selection of research topics. He explained that an ideal research theme should demonstrate novelty, universal relevance, and strong academic appeal. Furthermore, researchers are required to conduct comprehensive reviews of prior studies to identify unexplored research gaps.
He further elaborated on the technical aspects of writing scientific articles, including the importance of using footnotes and ensuring accuracy in formatting references according to the target journal’s style guidelines. A systematic structure—comprising introduction, literature review, discussion, and conclusion—serves as the fundamental framework for producing high-quality articles. He also emphasized that the use of relevant theories plays a crucial role in strengthening analysis and scholarly argumentation.
Kang Miki also highlighted the importance of researchers’ mindset in navigating the publication process. He stressed that article rejection is an integral part of academic life. Therefore, researchers must demonstrate perseverance, readiness to revise, and the ability to select appropriate journals to increase their chances of publication.
On that occasion, he also underscored the importance of research ethics, including the protection of personal data and academic integrity in writing. All contributors must be properly acknowledged, while practices such as data manipulation or improper attribution must be avoided. He also introduced the concept of mulang tarima as a form of academic responsibility to return the benefits of research to society through publications that are accessible and widely understood.
This activity is expected to enhance the academic capacity of lecturers and students, particularly at the master’s level, in producing competitive scholarly work at the international level. In line with the institution’s commitment, the Rector of UPNVJ reaffirmed that strengthening research and publication culture is part of the university’s transformation strategy toward becoming a leading and globally competitive institution.(www.upnvj.ac.id)
