EduAsiaNews, Canberra — Australia is reinforcing the foundation of its national research by establishing eight new Centres of Excellence under the coordination of the Australian Research Council (ARC). The eight centres have received a total investment of AU$279 million, equivalent to approximately IDR 2.84 trillion, and are scheduled to begin full operations in 2026.

The mission of this research initiative is to address the greatest challenges facing society, the environment, and industry — ranging from quantum computing and renewable energy to ocean health, biotechnology, and social inclusion. ARC Chief Executive Officer Professor Ute Roessner affirmed that these centres reflect Australia’s commitment to research that delivers real-world impact. “In these centres, we see the value of combining diverse expertise and perspectives to tackle the complex challenges of our time,” said Roessner.

Among the eight designated centres, two have been entrusted to the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The first is the ARC Centre of Excellence for Our Future Oceans, tasked with understanding and managing ocean change to support marine ecosystems, coastal communities, and a sustainable blue economy. The second is the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Performance and Integration, which focuses on overcoming scientific barriers toward reliable and large-scale quantum computers, while unlocking the full potential of quantum technology.

The University of Sydney has been mandated to lead two centres in the fields of biotechnology and cybersecurity. The ARC Centre of Excellence for Advanced Peptide and Protein Engineering (CAPE) will harness artificial intelligence and automation to transform peptide and protein engineering for the benefit of humanity and the planet. Meanwhile, the University of Wollongong has been entrusted with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Renewable Fuels, driving innovation in next-generation renewable fuels such as green hydrogen and ammonia, with the goal of positioning Australia as a global leader in clean energy exports. Three other universities also feature on the list of new centres of excellence: Griffith University, Flinders University, and Curtin University.

The announcement of the eight Centres of Excellence was made on 9 December 2025, with operations set to commence in 2026. Through this scheme, significant collaboration will take place between universities, government-funded research institutions, other research bodies, government agencies, and the business community both within and beyond Australia.
