EduAsiaNews, Semarang – Climate change has now become an increasingly urgent global issue. Rising global temperatures and extreme weather conditions have begun to affect people’s daily lives. One of the main causes is excessive human activity in exploiting natural resources, particularly through industrialization.
According to Dr.Eng. Ir. Bimastyaji Surya Ramadan, S.T., M.T., a lecturer in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Diponegoro University, the industrial sector is the largest contributor to carbon emissions worldwide. High emissions from industrial activities directly impact the environment, including the deterioration of air quality and the intensification of global warming.
Indonesia, as a country that is actively promoting industrialization, faces a serious threat if it fails to control the environmental impacts generated by industrial activities. “Industries are becoming increasingly widespread in Indonesia. If this is not controlled, ultimately we ourselves will bear the consequences. One example is the increasingly unpredictable climate change,” said Dr.Eng. Bimastyaji.
The government has prepared several mechanisms to address this issue, one of which is PROPER (Public Disclosure Program for Environmental Compliance). This mechanism requires companies to take responsibility for the environmental impacts they cause, including efforts to empower communities affected by industrial activities.
Nevertheless, he warned that overly strict supervision could also create new problems, such as the loss of livelihoods. In this regard, the government needs to act cautiously when taking action against companies that violate regulations.
“Communities also earn their income from industrial activities. However, when the government finds that an industry violates existing regulations, it cannot immediately shut it down, because this could lead to job losses and potentially trigger public protests,” he explained.
He emphasized that climate change is not solely the responsibility of industries. According to him, everyone plays a role in either accelerating or slowing its impacts. Therefore, he encourages the public to begin adopting environmentally friendly lifestyles.
“As members of society who are aware of environmental issues and climate change, we can certainly take many actions. One of them is adopting a green lifestyle, which can contribute—although perhaps in small ways—to reducing the impacts of climate change,” he concluded.
