EduAsiaNews, Semarang – Feeling sleepy during the day while fasting is a common experience for many people. This usually occurs because sleep patterns change due to the need to wake up for suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and perform night prayers during the month of Ramadan. However, with proper management of sleep patterns and nutritional intake, excessive daytime sleepiness can actually be minimized.
A lecturer in Nursing Science at the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University, Nisa Nur Hasanah, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., explained that sleepiness while fasting is often triggered by irregular sleep patterns.
“Avoid staying up late after the Tarawih prayer. Ideally, we should still get sufficient sleep, around six to eight hours each day. If possible, we can start sleeping at around 9 p.m. so the body remains refreshed when waking up for suhoor,” Nisa explained.
In addition to maintaining nighttime sleep, she also suggested making use of rest time during the day by taking a short nap, commonly known as a power nap. A nap of about 15 to 20 minutes is considered sufficient to help the body restore its energy. “Even a short nap can help the body recover, allowing us to continue our activities with better focus,” she added.
Another equally important factor is paying attention to food intake during suhoor. Nisa advised the public not to consume excessive amounts of carbohydrates, as this can trigger sleepiness more quickly. “It is also important to pay attention to the nutritional composition of the suhoor meal. Avoid consuming too many carbohydrates because they can make the body feel sleepy more quickly,” she said.
By maintaining proper sleep patterns, making good use of rest time, and paying attention to nutritional intake during suhoor, fasting can be carried out more comfortably and productively. “Getting enough sleep will help the body remain fit so that fasting can be observed more solemnly,” she concluded.
