Beijing Makes AI Classes Mandatory in Schools, Shaping a Tech-Literate Generation

By Edu Asia News Maret 5, 2026

EduAsiaNews, Beijing – A wind of sweeping change is blowing through Beijing’s classrooms. China’s capital has officially become the first provincial-level region in the country to make artificial intelligence (AI) a compulsory subject in all public schools, from primary through senior high school. Some 1,500 schools have already incorporated AI classes into their official curricula, in direct compliance with directives from the central government in Beijing.

The curriculum being rolled out is far from superficial. Every student is required to complete at least eight hours of AI instruction per semester, with content tailored to each level. Primary school children learn visual programming and basic robotics, while senior high school students are introduced to advanced AI applications, including designing functional smart hardware of their own.

This policy did not emerge overnight. It forms part of a long-planned national roadmap aimed at building a mature and sustainable technology talent ecosystem. The central government has urged all provinces to follow Beijing’s lead and weave AI education into their respective curricula, with the capital serving as the flagship model that must prove its worth.

The greatest challenge lies not in infrastructure, but in teacher readiness. Many educators are not yet equipped to deliver a subject as technical as AI to young students. To address this, Beijing has partnered with several leading technology universities to run intensive training programmes for teachers, while simultaneously developing instructional materials accessible to both educators and students alike.

Education experts have broadly welcomed the initiative, yet caution that its ambition must not outpace its substance. Good AI education is not merely about teaching students how to use the technology, it must also cultivate a critical understanding of its ethics, risks, and limitations. Only with that foundation will the generation being shaped today be truly capable of harnessing AI wisely: not merely as its users, but as the ones who determine its direction.
