UPNVJ Implements Digital Technology and IoT to Strengthen Waste Bank Operations in Bogor

EduAsiaNews, Bogor — The Faculty of Computer Science at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) has implemented digital technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) through a Community Service Program (PkM) entitled SMART-WASTE: Implementation of Digital Waste Bank Technology and Internet of Things to Improve the Performance of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank in Bogor Regency. The program was held on August 22–23, 2026, at the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank in Bogor Regency, as part of an effort to promote technology-based transformation in waste management.

The SMART-WASTE program was led by Novi Trisman Hadi, S.Pd., M.Kom., and formed part of the implementation of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi), particularly community service. The program introduced a technological innovation developed by students of the UPNVJ Faculty of Computer Science through a product called EcoScale, a system designed to support the digitalization of waste bank operations.

The implementation of SMART-WASTE included an awareness session on the importance of waste segregation at the source, an introduction to technological devices, and the handover of equipment to the management of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank. Through these activities, community members and waste bank managers gained an understanding of how technology can support more effective and sustainable waste management.

The application of digital technology and IoT through this program is expected to improve the operational efficiency of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank through a management system that is more measurable, well documented, and adaptable to technological developments. The innovation represents an initial step toward building a digital-based waste bank ecosystem that can strengthen community participation in environmental protection.

Chairman of the Lapak Lontar Waste Bank, Karsim, expressed his appreciation for the implementation of the SMART-WASTE program. According to him, the technological equipment provided through the program is beneficial in supporting the digitalization of waste bank management.

“This equipment is very useful in supporting the digitalization of Lapak Lontar,” Karsim said on Wednesday (August 26, 2026).

Head of the SMART-WASTE Community Service Team, Novi Trisman Hadi, explained that the program represents a collaboration among lecturers, students, and the community to provide science-based solutions.

“This activity is a collaboration among lecturers, students, and the community to implement the Three Pillars of Higher Education, particularly in the area of community service,” Novi Trisman Hadi said.

The development of EcoScale through SMART-WASTE also provides an opportunity for students of the UPNVJ Faculty of Computer Science to apply their academic knowledge in addressing community needs. The program is expected to go beyond socialization and equipment handover and continue developing into a sustainable technology-based waste bank management system.

Rector of UPN “Veteran” Jakarta, Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, M.A., Comm., emphasized that technology-based innovations developed by the university community should deliver tangible benefits to society.
