EduAsiaNews, Cambridge — The University of Cambridge is set to host the United Kingdom’s first quantum research institution born from a partnership between academia and the global technology industry. IonQ, a quantum computing company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has officially signed a landmark agreement with the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world.

IonQ has partnered with the University of Cambridge to establish the IonQ Quantum Innovation Centre, designed to accelerate the commercialisation of quantum research and the development of specialist talent in the field across the UK. The collaboration will see IonQ’s sixth-generation 256-qubit system installed on the Cambridge campus, while also providing access to cloud-based quantum computing to support research in computing, networking, sensing, and security.
The initiative aligns with the United Kingdom’s National Quantum Strategy and will focus on quantum hardware research, as well as its applications in chemistry, materials science, optimisation, security, and advanced communication protocols.

Niccolo de Masi, Chairman and CEO of IonQ, expressed his conviction that the partnership will deliver tangible impact. “This landmark agreement deepens IonQ’s commitment to the United Kingdom and accelerates our technology platform with new research at one of the most influential physics centres in the world,” he said.

Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, underscored that the benefits of the new institution extend well beyond Cambridge itself. “This is not just a new facility for Cambridge — it is a facility for the whole of the UK, and it will develop not only exciting new technologies, but also the next generation of British leaders in quantum science,” she said.
Cambridge plays a central role in the country’s quantum ecosystem, participating in four of the five UK national quantum technology hubs that connect leading universities, industry partners, and government laboratories. (**)
