EduAsiaNews, Chicago — The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Chicago facilitated the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) and Northern Illinois University (NIU) on Friday (September 11) at the NIU campus in DeKalb, Illinois. The agreement strengthens cross-border academic and research partnerships while providing a foundation for the development of more specific technical cooperation between the two universities.
The signing of the MoU was witnessed by NIU leadership, deans and heads of study and research centers, as well as a number of Indonesianists and Indonesian students pursuing doctoral studies at NIU.
The cooperation will focus on education and research to support sustainable development, including the development of green energy, agriculture to strengthen food security, and environmental conservation.
As an initial step, the two universities will explore technical cooperation in water resource management by combining NIU’s expertise in water treatment and water quality through strategic research centers, such as the Water in a Changing World Center and the Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability (NICCS), with UMM’s status as a UNESCO Chair and Host Institution for Sustainable Water Ecosystem, designated by UNESCO in April 2026.
Special Advisor to the UMM Rector for International Cooperation, Ambassador Priyo Iswanto, welcomed the partnership.
“This educational cooperation expands the academic networks between UMM and NIU, as well as between Indonesia and the United States, while creating synergies between the academic strengths of the two universities,” Ambassador Priyo said.
The two universities also share a common vision of placing student success and positive contributions to society as important components of higher education. This shared perspective provides a foundation for developing cooperation that is not only focused on strengthening academic capacity but also on generating tangible benefits for society.
For KJRI Chicago, the UMM-NIU partnership forms part of educational diplomacy efforts in the Midwestern United States. The cooperation represents one of the initial implementations of the Statement of Mutual Cooperation (SMC) signed by the Government of Indonesia and the State of Illinois on August 7, 2026.
The SMC, among other areas, promotes cooperation in education, including academic programs, scholarships, STEM, as well as the exchange of innovation and technology.
UMM and NIU are expected to begin implementing the MoU next year through small-scale and practical programs, including the development and collaboration of ongoing initiatives such as NIU’s Educate Global Program. UMM also offers scholarship and internship opportunities that can support capacity development.
