EduAsiaNews, Hsinchu — Taiwan’s pride in research, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), has once again made its mark on the global stage of innovation. On January 22, 2026, ITRI was officially included in the Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovators 2026 list, marking its tenth recognition and the ninth consecutive year the institute has received this prestigious honor. This achievement is not merely a number — it is a reflection of Taiwan’s consistency and depth of commitment to building a world-class research and innovation ecosystem.

As one of only three research organizations recognized this year, ITRI maintains its position as the most frequently awarded research institution in the Asia-Pacific region. This exclusive standing places ITRI alongside the giants of the global technology industry, names such as ASML, Apple, Qualcomm, Toshiba, and Dow, an acknowledgment that affirms Asian research institutions are capable of competing at the very top of the world’s innovation league.

Clarivate, the London-based global intelligence firm, compiles this list using a highly rigorous methodology. Assessments are conducted based on patent-driven metrics that measure technological uniqueness, impact, globalization, success track record, and volume of innovation.
In this regard, ITRI was recognized as outstanding for applying a market-oriented patent strategy, one that is aligned with industry needs and projections for future applications. Its technology-based patent management system ensures that every research outcome genuinely addresses industry demand and delivers sustainable impact.

Maroun S. Mourad, President of Intellectual Property at Clarivate, expressed high praise for ITRI’s achievement. “Recognition as a Top 100 Global Innovator is an extraordinary accomplishment given the rapid pace of change,” said Mourad. “ITRI consistently demonstrates outstanding innovation performance, particularly in its significant investment in global patent protection.” Mourad added that this year’s winners are not merely responding to change — they are designing it.

ITRI’s success reflects Taiwan’s long-term strategy of fostering synergy among research institutions, universities, and industry. In early March 2026, ITRI announced the formation of an Innovation Alliance together with universities and research bodies to advance Taiwan’s technology strategy and innovation roadmap going forward. For developing nations across Asia — including Indonesia — ITRI’s journey offers a valuable lesson: consistent, structured, and market-oriented innovation is the key to breaking through onto the world stage.
