EduAsiaNews, Beijing — China’s dominance in artificial intelligence research is becoming increasingly unstoppable. In the latest update to CSRankings 2026, a widely recognized ranking system within the global computer science community, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsinghua University have jointly claimed the top position worldwide, displacing the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Carnegie Mellon University, which had long been fixtures at the summit of the list.
Even more striking, seven of the top ten spots are now occupied by Chinese universities, including Zhejiang University, Peking University, Nanjing University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. CSRankings measures faculty publication output at the world’s most prestigious computer science conferences, making it a reliable reflection of genuine research productivity.
Tsinghua has distinguished itself particularly in the pure AI subcategory, driven by its Department of Computer Science and Technology and its AI Industry Research Institute, both of which have consistently produced influential papers in recent years. Among its latest breakthroughs is the work of Professor Wu Yongwei’s team, which developed a new AI infrastructure system that was named among Tsinghua’s ten best research achievements of 2025.
This surge is closely tied to China’s massive government investment in higher education and technology research since 2015. The “Double First-Class” initiative -targeting world-class universities and academic disciplines- has proven effective in cultivating a competitive and productive research ecosystem within a relatively short period of time.
These developments reflect a broader shift in the center of gravity of global technology innovation. Analysts note that if this trend continues, the United States’ leSumber: EurekAlert, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University Press, People’s Dailadership in AI research, which has gone virtually unchallenged for decades, will face an increasingly serious challenge from the East.
