EduAsiaNews, Surabaya — The Rector of Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa), Nurhasan, also known as Cak Hasan, has been reappointed as the Chairman of the East Java branch of the Indonesian Athletics Association (PASI Jatim) for the 2026–2030 term. He was officially inaugurated during the Provincial Conference (Musprov) held at the Rectorate Building, Campus 2 Unesa, Lidah Wetan, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

Chairman of the East Java National Sports Committee (KONI Jatim), Muhammad Nabil, expressed his appreciation for Cak Hasan’s leadership. According to him, Cak Hasan’s experience and managerial capacity are crucial assets in strengthening athletics in East Java.

“The election of Mr. Nurhasan is extraordinary. He has a deep understanding of how to develop athletics. Our hope is that East Java remains strong in athletics, especially since there are as many as 46 events being contested,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of a tiered recruitment and training system starting from the grassroots level. With so many events, he noted, the potential for winning medals heavily depends on human resource quality, continuous selection processes, and the frequency of athlete participation in various competitions, both multi-event and single-event tournaments.

“If athletes rarely participate in competitions, they may be strong in training but weak in actual competition. Therefore, they must be entered into events regularly to build competitive mentality,” he stressed.

Similarly, Secretary-General of PASI Jatim, Rachman Widohardhono, expressed hope that the management team would be able to evaluate regulations and organizational governance effectively, driving more progressive and achievement-oriented athletic development.

Meanwhile, Unesa Rector Nurhasan, or Cak Hasan, expressed his gratitude for the trust given. He emphasized that his second term would focus more on systematized, design-based training rather than simply responding incidentally to competition agendas.

“This is my second term. I want to convey to the public that athletics in the future must have a new formula. Everything must be discussed and designed to prepare talented athletes. Since there are 46 events contested in the National Sports Week (PON), everything must be by-design,” he explained.

Cak Hasan added that the training focus would not be limited to the PON level but would start from the most basic levels, such as provincial sports week (Porprov) and age-group championships. According to him, layered development is key to creating a consistent and sustainable generation of athletes.

Within the next one to two months, his team will finalize the structure of the management board and develop priority programs, including strengthening junior events as benchmarks for evaluating young athletes’ performance.

He is optimistic that, with a well-planned design and collaboration among all stakeholders, East Java’s athletics achievements can improve significantly compared to previous accomplishments.

“Our hope is to surpass past achievements. East Java has historically been one of the largest contributors of national medals. In the future, we aim not only to bring pride to East Java but also to Indonesia on the global stage,” he concluded.
