EduAsiaNews, Jakarta – Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) took swift action to respond to the impact of volcanic ash following an eruption by distributing 2,000 masks to members of the campus community on Monday (September 7, 2026).
The distribution was led directly by UPNVJ Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Cooperation, and Information Systems, Dr. dr. Ria Maria Theresa, Sp.KJ., M.H. The masks were distributed in the UPNVJ canteen area to students, education and administrative staff, canteen workers, security personnel, office attendants, and other members of the campus community who continued their activities despite air conditions affected by volcanic ash.
The initiative represented both a rapid response and a preventive measure by UPNVJ to protect the health of the campus community, particularly those whose work and activities require frequent mobility and exposure to outdoor areas.
“We want to ensure that everyone in the campus community remains protected. This includes not only students, lecturers, and education and administrative staff, but also those who work every day to support campus activities, from security personnel and canteen workers to office attendants. They are all part of the UPNVJ family, and we must look after one another,” Ria said.
She added that the distribution of masks was not merely a preventive measure but also reflected the university’s concern for everyone within the campus environment. “In situations like this, the most important thing is to care for one another and not neglect our health. We hope these masks will help reduce the risk of exposure to volcanic ash, particularly for those who still need to work and carry out activities outdoors,” she said.
UPNVJ also urged all members of the campus community to limit outdoor activities unless necessary, wear masks when in open areas, maintain personal hygiene, and seek medical assistance promptly if they experience health complaints such as coughing, shortness of breath, or eye irritation.
The distribution of 2,000 masks also served as a manifestation of the values of National Defense (Bela Negara), expressed through care, solidarity, and concrete action to safeguard the well-being of others.
