EduAsiaNews, Malang – Amid increasing industry demands for precision and risk analysis capabilities, the Undergraduate Program in Actuarial Science at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), has emerged as an increasingly relevant field of study. The program, which is under the Department of Mathematics, began admitting students in 2024 and entered its third year in 2026.

A distinctive feature of the Undergraduate Actuarial Science Program at FMIPA UM lies in its focus on disaster studies and social security. In general, actuarial science studies quantitative financial risk management, particularly in relation to insurance, fund management, and risk calculation.

The Program Coordinator of the Undergraduate Actuarial Science Program, Azizah, S.Pd., M.Si., stated that learning in the program goes beyond theoretical knowledge. Students are also guided to understand the practical application of actuarial science in real-life contexts.

“Students not only study actuarial theory, but are also encouraged to understand how risk calculations and social security systems are applied in real life. Research outcomes in this field are integrated into classroom learning, enabling students to comprehend the practical applications of actuarial science,” she explained in an interview with the UM Public Relations Team on Wednesday (March 11, 2026).

Although relatively new, the program has already achieved several accomplishments at both national and international levels. Students of the Undergraduate Actuarial Science Program at FMIPA UM won a bronze medal at the International Undergraduate Research Innovation, Invention, and Design Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences held by UiTM Malaysia. In 2025, the program also secured second place in the study program and D4 category at the Anugerah Kinerja Unggul (AKU) UM.

These achievements are supported by numerous student development activities regularly organized, such as the Actuarial Study Club (ASC), Actuarial Student Mobility Program (ASMP), Creative Research & Reasoning Club (CR2C), Ruang Aktuaria, Actuarial Research Program, ACTIV – Ruang Juara, International Workshops, Practitioner Classes, and Meta-Response Classes.

In terms of partnerships, the program has established networks with various institutions. At the national level, collaborations include Mirae Asset Sekuritas, the Indonesian Society of Actuaries (Persatuan Aktuaris Indonesia), and the Indonesian Actuarial Science Society (Masyarakat Ilmu Aktuaria Indonesia). Internationally, partnerships have been established with UiTM Malaysia through student exchange and mobility programs.

The curriculum of the Undergraduate Actuarial Science Program at FMIPA UM is designed to allow students to complete their studies within seven semesters. The coursework includes general university subjects, core program courses, and elective courses within two concentrations: finance and social security, and general insurance. Students are also given the opportunity to take transdisciplinary courses outside the program to broaden their academic perspectives.

Graduates of this program have broad career prospects. Equipped with mathematical and statistical analytical skills, they may pursue careers as actuaries, data analysts, business analysts, and professionals in technology and securities companies. Other career opportunities are also available in the investment sector, including roles as investment specialists or fund managers.

In 2026, the Undergraduate Actuarial Science Program at FMIPA UM offers a quota of 140 students through the SNBP, SNBT, and UM Independent Selection pathways. Supporting facilities are available through learning infrastructure in the Department of Mathematics, including computer laboratories for computational practicum, basic programming courses, and actuarial computing.

With an adaptive curriculum, distinctive academic focus, and strong national and international collaborations, the Undergraduate Actuarial Science Program at FMIPA UM is expected to produce graduates who are competent in risk management and well-prepared to face the challenges of the professional world.
