EduAsiaNews, Riyadh — A transcontinental research partnership with the potential to transform the approach to managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Saudi Arabia was officially announced in early March 2026. King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC) in Riyadh and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, United States, have established a three-year collaboration to investigate why IBD so frequently appears in clusters within Saudi families.
The project focuses on Saudi families in which multiple members have been diagnosed with IBD, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. By identifying the biological markers that drive disease mechanisms in these high-risk families, both parties aim to accelerate the development of new diagnostics and individually tailored therapies for patients around the world.

The Director of the Prince Naif Bin Abdulaziz Health Research Center — KSUMC’s research institution — Abdurahman Niazy, affirmed that the collaboration reflects a commitment to building a discovery platform that translates rigorous clinical data into actionable precision medicine. “By combining KSUMC’s capabilities in identifying and characterizing high-risk familial cohorts with Mount Sinai’s expertise in multi-omics biomarker discovery, we aim to define clearer biological signals to support earlier risk assessment and more precise treatment strategies,” he stated.

The collaboration further cements Saudi Arabia’s position as a magnet for global health research, in line with the ambitions of Vision 2030, which is driving the Kingdom’s universities not merely to publish scientific findings, but to generate tangible solutions for society — both at home and abroad.
