West Java Governor Kang Dedi Mulyadi (KDM) urged around 4,800 new students of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) to balance the use of the heart and mind in both academic life and everyday living.
According to KDM, the heart—representing what he describes as the feminine aspect within every individual—has the power to build intuition and sensitivity.
Meanwhile, the mind—representing the masculine aspect—is essential for creating measurable, standardized systems.
“Successful students are not only those who are good at reading books in the library, but also those who listen, observe, and feel,” KDM said during the Campus Life Orientation for New Students (PKKMB) at the Tennis Indoor Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, August 11, 2025.
“The heart gives us sensitivity, while the mind ensures we can compete on a global stage,” Kang Dedi Mulyadi added, as stated in a UPNVJ press release.
KDM emphasized that one’s success is not determined solely by academic grades, but also by the breadth of life experiences they go through.
He cited examples of many successful people in engineering, automotive, and business whose skills were shaped by the habit of listening, observing, and trying—rather than solely through formal education.
“The greatest organization in your life is the universe. Pass through it, face its waves, and train both your emotions and your thinking power,” KDM asserted.
He also encouraged students to actively seek experiences, whether through organizations, social interactions, or direct field involvement.
This way, students can develop intellectual, emotional, and spiritual intelligence in balance.
“If you want to succeed, gain more experiences. Don’t be afraid to go through life’s ups and downs, because that’s where your strength is formed,” KDM concluded. (www.upnvj.ac.id)
