EduAsiaNews, Tokyo — Japan is once again reaffirming its commitment as a world-class global research hub. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has officially opened the second-round applications for its international research fellowship program for fiscal year 2026, offering a golden opportunity for talented young researchers from around the world to work in the finest laboratories the Land of the Rising Sun has to offer.

This prestigious program is specifically designed to support early-career postdoctoral researchers from various countries in conducting collaborative research at leading Japanese universities and research institutions for a full 12 to 24 months. Its scope is remarkably broad — spanning all fields of academic inquiry, from the humanities and social sciences to the most cutting-edge natural sciences — making it one of the most inclusive research fellowship schemes Japan has ever extended to the international academic community.

On the financial side, the JSPS offer is highly competitive. Each fellow will receive a monthly stipend of 362,000 yen (approximately USD 2,400), a round-trip economy-class airfare, an initial settlement allowance of 200,000 yen, and international travel insurance coverage throughout the fellowship period. This comprehensive financial support is designed to allow researchers to focus entirely on their work, free from the burden of living expenses.

That said, this is not a fellowship one can apply for casually. Applicants must be citizens of a country that maintains diplomatic relations with Japan, must have completed their doctoral degree within the past six years prior to the start of the fellowship, and must not have previously received a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship. Equally important, candidates must first secure a formal invitation from a host researcher affiliated with a Japanese university or research institution before submitting their application.

For interested researchers, time is running short. The second-round application deadline is 28 April 2026, with the fellowship period covering 1 April 2026 through 31 March 2027. Prospective applicants are strongly advised to establish contact with a potential host researcher in Japan promptly, prepare a well-developed research proposal, and complete all academic documentation well ahead of the deadline to maximise their chances of selection.
