EduAsiaNews, Surabaya – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) once again held Eid al-Adha prayers attended by members of its academic community and the general public. The event took place at MERR-C Campus on Wednesday (May 27, 2026). University leaders, faculty members, staff, students, and local residents gathered in large numbers at Ulul Azmi Mosque.
This year’s Eid al-Adha sermon was delivered by Dr. H. Halilul Rohman, M.H.I. In his sermon, he encouraged worshippers to emulate the exemplary qualities of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail, particularly their unwavering faith and sincerity in carrying out Allah’s commands.
Emulating the Obedience of the Prophets
Eid al-Adha is inseparable from the historical event involving Prophet Ismail, who was commanded to be sacrificed. According to Dr. Halil, this event reflects an extraordinary level of faith and obedience, demonstrated by Prophet Ismail even at a very young age.
“The command to sacrifice Prophet Ismail came when he was only seven years old. Let us reflect on this: a seven-year-old child who, when faced with such a command, did not rebel but instead willingly accepted it and even advised his father,” he said.
Dr. Halil further emphasized that faith and obedience are deeply influenced by parental guidance, as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim in nurturing these values in Prophet Ismail.
He also reminded the congregation never to cease praying, especially for their children. However, he stressed that prayers should be accompanied by sincerity and firm conviction that Allah will answer them.
“This serves as a lesson for all of us never to stop praying for our children, wherever they may be. It is prayer that guides, watches over, and protects them,” he stated.
Appreciation for the Organizing Committee
The Eid al-Adha celebration at UNAIR continued with the ritual slaughter of sacrificial animals, involving students and administrative staff as members of the organizing committee. According to data from the Ulul Azmi Mosque Qurban Committee at MERR-C Campus, a total of 18 sacrificial animals were slaughtered, consisting of 10 cattle and 8 goats.
The slaughtering process was officially inaugurated by Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, S.E., M.Si., M.Fin. He was accompanied by University Secretary Prof. Dr. Dwi Setyawan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt.; Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni Prof. Ir. Mochammad Amin Alamsjah, M.Si., Ph.D.; Vice Rector for Entrepreneurial Ecosystem and Business Development Prof. Dr. Koko Srimulyo, Drs., M.Si.; Director of Infrastructure, Environment, and Operations Management Prof. Iman Prihandono, S.H., M.H., LL.M., Ph.D.; and Head of the Institute for Sustainable Community Service Prof. Hery Purnobasuki, M.Si., Ph.D.
In his remarks, Prof. Madyan stated that the Eid al-Adha prayer and qurban activities have become longstanding annual traditions at UNAIR.
“For more than ten years, we have consistently carried out the slaughtering of sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha. I would like to express my gratitude to the organizing committee for successfully managing this annual event,” he said.
Prof. Madyan expressed hope that the distribution of qurban meat would proceed smoothly and effectively. He also conveyed his appreciation to the committee members who dedicated their time and effort to ensuring the success of the program.
“May we soon be able to distribute the qurban meat to those who are entitled to receive it. May Allah reward all of us for our efforts,” he concluded.
