FMIPA UNJ and UTM Inaugurate Joint Laboratory to Strengthen International Research Collaboration

EduAsiaNews, Jakarta — The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Negeri Jakarta (FMIPA UNJ) has officially inaugurated a joint laboratory with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The ceremony took place in the Latief Hendraningrat Hall on April 4, 2026.

The event also featured the signing of the laboratory nameplate for the “Inauguration of the Joint Laboratory for Industrial Microbiology” by UNJ Rector Prof. Komarudin, represented by Prof. Ifan Iskandar, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Alumni, alongside UTM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Shafry bin Mohd Rahim.

In his virtual remarks, Prof. Komarudin stated that the establishment of the UNJ-UTM joint laboratory is part of strengthening the academic climate through collaborative research between the two institutions.

“Today, we further strengthen this cooperation with the establishment of a joint laboratory that connects UNJ-UTM academics as well as industry partners,” he said.

Prof. Komarudin expressed his hope that the joint laboratory would enhance research collaboration, innovation, publications, and the downstream application of research with impacts on national and global development. He added that the collaboration is expected to generate new ideas, strengthen partnerships, open opportunities for further cooperation, and act as a catalyst for impactful actions for the future.

In addition to the nameplate signing, the event was celebrated for announcing fully-funded Ph.D. scholarships for FMIPA UNJ lecturers at UTM.

FMIPA Dean Hadi Nasbey welcomed this scholarship opportunity, emphasizing that it further strengthens diplomatic and academic ties between UNJ and UTM.

“The scholarships will be provided for bioprocessing and biotechnology programs, which align with the academic development at FMIPA UNJ,” he stated.

Hadi Nasbey also expressed hope that scholarship recipients would strengthen the fields of bioprocessing and biotechnology while generating applied research and downstream products.

The Vice Dean for Research, Innovation, Information Systems, and Cooperation at FMIPA, Prof. Dalia Sukmawati, added that scholarship recipients are expected to complete their programs and contribute positively to FMIPA UNJ in the future.

She further noted that other outcomes of the joint laboratory include prototyping collaborations between FMIPA and UTM teams, as well as joint Ph.D. supervision programs.

The inauguration of the FMIPA UNJ–UTM joint laboratory marks a significant milestone in strengthening international research collaboration focused on innovation and applied research. This partnership not only broadens academic networks but also enhances human resource capacity through scholarships and sustainable research cooperation. Moving forward, the synergy is expected to produce high-impact research that advances science and technology while contributing to national and global development.
