EduAsiaNews, Seoul – The South Korean government has reopened the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) 2026, a fully funded scholarship program for international students seeking higher education at universities across the country. Managed by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), the program serves as a key instrument in South Korea’s efforts to attract global talent while expanding its education diplomacy.

GKS covers a wide range of academic levels, from diploma to doctoral programs. However, particular emphasis is placed on postgraduate education, especially master’s and doctoral degrees, which are designed to strengthen South Korea’s research and innovation capacity. Through this scheme, the government hopes international students will contribute to the country’s academic ecosystem and build long-term global networks.

In the 2026 guidelines, the South Korean government has set a number of strict requirements. Applicants for master’s and doctoral programs must be under 40 years of age, demonstrate strong academic performance, equivalent to at least 80 percent at their home institution, and meet physical and mental health standards. The government also restricts applications from individuals who have previously completed degree programs in South Korea, with limited exceptions for former GKS recipients with outstanding academic records and Korean language proficiency.

The main attraction of the GKS lies in its comprehensive funding scheme. Scholarship recipients receive full tuition coverage, round-trip airfare, and a monthly living allowance of 1 million won for master’s and doctoral students. Additional benefits include health insurance, research support, subsidies for thesis and dissertation printing, as well as an initial settlement allowance upon arrival in South Korea.

Beyond financial support, the GKS requires recipients to complete a one-year Korean language training program before starting their degree studies. This policy reflects the South Korean government’s effort to ensure international students can adapt academically and socially. Through the GKS, South Korea offers not only free education but also seeks to build a global alumni network
