Artificial Intelligence Deployed to Respond to Environmental Degradation

By Edu Asia News Januari 5, 2026

EduAsiaNews, CERN, Switzerland — Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer confined to improving industrial efficiency or accelerating computation. In a new report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in collaboration with open-science publisher Frontiers, AI is positioned as a critical tool for addressing the climate crisis and accelerating responses to global environmental degradation.

Titled 10 Emerging Technology Solutions for Planetary Health, the report identifies ten emerging technologies with the potential to help humanity operate once again within the Earth’s safe planetary boundaries. Many of these innovations are connected by their reliance on AI, particularly in large-scale data processing and science-based decision-making.

One prominent example is timely and specific Earth observation, which integrates satellite data with machine learning. This approach enables near real-time monitoring of climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. Information that once arrived too late to influence action can now support faster, more precise policy and mitigation decisions.

AI also plays a central role in the convergence of soil health technologies. Field sensors, microbiome engineering, and artificial intelligence are combined to assess soil conditions in detail, from carbon content to fertility levels. The approach is designed not only to improve agricultural productivity, but also to enhance carbon sequestration and strengthen food system resilience under climate stress.

The report was released at a critical moment, as seven of the nine planetary boundaries—scientific thresholds defining a safe operating space for humanity—have already been exceeded. WEF Managing Director Jeremy Jurgens noted that while climate challenges are already evident, the full potential of existing technologies remains underutilized. Meanwhile, Johan Rockström of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research emphasized that no single technology offers a standalone solution. However, when AI is mobilized alongside other innovations, he said, the opportunity to bend the curve of environmental crisis toward a safer future remains within reach. (*)
