Edu Asia New,Not many undergraduate graduates in Indonesia are able to publish their work in globally reputable journals. However, Raka—born in Garut on 15 June 2003—has proven that great dreams can emerge from regional universities, provided there is determination and hard work.
Two of Raka’s scientific papers have been published in prestigious international journals:
“Integrating Hydrodynamic Modelling and Hazard Assessment to Mitigate Flood Risks in the Pemali River Basin, Central Java, Indonesia,” published in The International Journal of River Basin Management (Q2, Taylor & Francis, United Kingdom).
“The Effectiveness of Groin Modifications to Reduce the Impacts of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)-induced Port Siltation in Adapting to Climate Change,” published in the Journal of Civil Engineering Forum (Scopus-indexed and Sinta 1, Universitas Gadjah Mada).
Uniquely, Raka has also contributed to the field of clinical medicine through an article published in Jurnal Medica Hospitalia (Sinta 3, Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang). The study, entitled “Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Gallbladder Stone Cases at dr. Soekardjo Hospital, West Java: An Evidence-Based Study,” examines the increasing prevalence of gallstone cases in Tasikmalaya. This cross-disciplinary collaboration underscores that the younger generation is not afraid to transcend traditional academic boundaries.
Raka’s success cannot be separated from the guidance of Andhy Romdani, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., a lecturer widely known for his dedication and close, supportive relationship with students.
“Raka possesses a level of enthusiasm rarely found in someone his age. He is persistent, diligent, and never hesitates to express his ideas,” said Romdani, Ph.D., a doctoral graduate of National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan.
This accomplished and energetic lecturer at Universitas Siliwangi has published 13 books and 9 Scopus-indexed international journal articles. Interestingly, his mentoring approach does not take place solely in laboratories or classrooms. Research discussions are often held in cafés over coffee, creating a relaxed atmosphere in which students feel more comfortable. This approach has proven effective in generating major ideas through simple yet impactful methods.
“Generation Z is indeed unique, and therefore requires a special approach. They simply need to be stimulated with something enjoyable so their talents can be easily developed and propelled onto the global stage,” Romdani, Ph.D. stated enthusiastically.
On his graduation day, 21 August 2025, Raka expressed his gratitude.
“Mr. Andhy is not just a lecturer, but someone who is truly present for his students. He taught me that research is not merely about numbers and data, but about meaningful work that can be carried out enjoyably and have a real impact on society,” he said. Raka dedicated this remarkable achievement to his parents and extended family in Garut, Banjar, and Yogyakarta.
Raka’s achievement continues the positive trend among Universitas Siliwangi students. Previously, Fahmi Rahmat Amanulloh—his junior—also succeeded in publishing in a reputable Scopus-indexed international journal, Journal of Water and Climate Change (IWA Publishing, United Kingdom, Q2), with an article entitled “Morpho-hydrodynamic Processes Impacted by the 2022 Extreme La Niña Event and High River Discharge Conditions in the Southern Coastal Area of West Java, Indonesia.” Today, an increasing number of Civil Engineering students at Universitas Siliwangi are motivated to follow in their footsteps. They feel encouraged and inspired by Romdani, Ph.D.’s contemporary mentoring style, which remains strongly focused on academic excellence.
Raka’s story stands as clear evidence that students from regional areas are capable of breaking through global boundaries. From a small city in East Priangan, he has demonstrated that perseverance, courage, and proper guidance can enable Indonesian students to stand shoulder to shoulder with researchers from around the world.
